High-Rise Moving Day in NYC: Who Coordinates What?

In a high-rise move, the moving truck is only one part of the schedule. The building, its staff, and the reserved freight elevator can determine how the entire day unfolds.

Building management confirms the rules

Management or the designated building office should explain moving hours, freight elevator procedures, protection rules, loading access, and any required deposit. Ask for written instructions and the correct contact person for moving day.

If a COI is required, forward the exact wording and additional-insured requirements to the moving company early enough for review. The building determines whether that documentation meets its rules.

The resident reserves the access window

Confirm the move date and elevator reservation at both properties. Ensure the elevator window covers the expected movement of belongings, and ask whether setup or removal of protective padding happens inside that window.

Do not schedule the crew on the assumption that an elevator will be available all day. If the window is fixed, communicate its start and end time to the moving coordinator.

The mover plans staffing and handling

Give the mover the inventory, floor level, elevator dimensions where relevant, and loading instructions. This helps the team determine staffing, equipment, protective materials, and the order items should be moved.

Flag oversized furniture and delicate items before moving day. If a piece cannot fit inside the designated elevator, a separate handling decision may be needed rather than improvising in the corridor.

Confirm one final handoff

The day before, verify the access window with building staff and tell the movers about any changes. Keep the management contact number handy and make sure service doors and hallways are clear.

The NYC elevator reservation guide covers the paperwork in more depth. For the move itself, Liffey's local moving team can plan around your building's approved requirements.
